At least Vidal is a better writer than, say, a Nicholson Baker, so there was a layer of candy coating over this crap. It’s all easy and obvious. The second time I read it, i got the subtext.

Duluth is a novel by Gore Vidal. I gather this was supposed to be fraught with ruluth amusing, scathing commentary on the excesses of the ‘s, but either I was too young back then to fully get in on the joke, or it’s so obtuse that only ggore author knows it’s there. Through the first half of the book, I tried to widen my view to pick up on any extended metaphors I was missing; by the second half I was content to be in the story itself.

The word processor has a memory bank containing all the beauty and all the tripe of every fiction written, and composing to her is more like compositing tropes from here, narratives from there, and characters from everywhere else.

Summarising the novel would also be a waste of my time, since the storylines all take various absurdist detours into fictional reality, political satire, edgy rape humour something uncommon these days—wonder whyand an exhausting display of imaginative barbs that relent only when the book staggers to its bug apocalypse climax.

Overall, nothing is funny or outrageous except all of the funny, funny raping because the world this book takes place in has no rules so there are no transgressions. I’m interested now to read Myra Breckinridge as apparently that’s his first and supposedly better effort in this style. Only the most obvious one–and smug culture-watchers will certainly find some self-congratulatory pleasure here.

He was a lifelong isolationist Democrat. The two biggest things about this that make it less successful than it should be are, for me, that it isn’t anywhere near as funny as it should be and that I could have written something like this.

But this sort of in-crowd parody is better done in those New Yorker one-or-two-page humor pieces.
